Dear HESD Community,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! As we kick off a new year, our schools are filled with energy, and we’re excited to have everyone back. Whether you’re new to HESD or returning, we want you to know how important you are to our community. Your involvement helps make HESD a great place to learn and grow.
What truly sets HESD apart is our strong sense of community—fueled by our dedicated educators, committed administrators, and hardworking staff. They all play a key role in supporting our students' success and well-being. We offer a wide range of academic programs and activities to meet students' interests, along with services that support their overall wellness.
We’re also proud to share that four of our schools—E.O. Green, Blackstock, Haycox, and Williams—have been selected for California’s Community Schools program. This program is helping us turn these schools into community hubs, offering services like mental health counseling, resources for families and more to help students succeed.
This year, we’re continuing with the second phase of our Strategic Arts Education Plan, which brings more creative opportunities to our students.
In terms of facilities, we’ve been busy making significant improvements across the district to ensure our schools are safe, comfortable, and up-to-date. As of this fall, ten of our 11 schools now have updated heating and new air-conditioning systems. Bard Elementary, the last school in the district to receive these upgrades, is in the final stage of construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
We’ve also completed a variety of other projects to enhance our campuses:
Exterior Painting: Both Hueneme and Beach Schools have received a fresh coat of paint, giving them a vibrant and welcoming appearance.
Breezeway Re-roof: The breezeway at Beach School has been re-roofed, improving its durability and protection against the elements.
Classroom Restoration and Flood Mitigation: Hueneme School has undergone classroom restorations, along with flood mitigation and drainage improvements to prevent future water damage.
New Carpet: We’ve installed new carpet in 25 classrooms across the district, creating a fresh and clean space for students and teachers.
Playground Upgrades: The playgrounds at Sunkist and Williams have been resurfaced with new slurry and striping, and we’ve added new playground woodchips at Larsen and Haycox for enhanced safety.
Fencing and Drop-off Area Expansion: Sunkist School now has new fencing and an expanded drop-off area, improving both security and traffic flow.
New Railing: Parkview School has been fitted with new railing for added safety.
Kitchen Floor Replacement: Hathaway School’s kitchen has received a new floor, improving hygiene and functionality.
As we look forward to a great year ahead, we’re especially grateful for the partnerships we have with parents and guardians. Your involvement and support are key to creating a collaborative environment where students can thrive. Thank you for being an integral part of our HESD family!
Best regards,
Dr. Christine Walker, Superintendent, Hueneme ESD
